NMMA ADOPTS NEW STANDARDS FOR CO ALARMS ON BOATS:
MARINE TECHNOLOGIES, INC. MEETS STANDARDS
(Volo, IL – July 12, 2001) The National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) announced in March that it has adopted the ABYC standard A-24, “Carbon Monoxide Detectors in Gasoline Powered Boats”. This action calls for NMMA-certified manufacturers to install carbon monoxide (CO) alarms on gasoline engine powered boats with closed accommodation compartments. The ABYC standard requires that CO alarms used on boats be listed by Underwriters Laboratories to UL 2034 – Marine Use. Currently only two manufacturers of CO alarms have models that meet this standard, including Marine Technologies, Inc. (MTI).
Effective the beginning of the 2002 model year NMMA, representing its nearly 1,400 member companies, requires manufacturers to adhere to this requirement of installing CO alarms on gasoline powered boats built with enclosed heads, galleys and sleeping areas. According to Tom Wisniewski, president of MTI, this is a positive step toward safer boating.
“We are extremely pleased that NMMA has adopted the CO safety standard and that our product, which meets the stringent marine safety standards of UL 2034, is available for manufacturers immediately,” Wisniewski said. “I am also pleased that several boat builders have incorporated CO alarms in any boat with a sleeping accommodation and or an outboard engine. Since CO can enter any boat with or without a galley I think they are being prudent in their decision.”
CO poisoning causes flu like symptoms including headache, nausea and fatigue and is often misdiagnosed as seasickness. Low levels or background levels of CO are normally found in recreational boating. While engine exhaust is
the typical cause, other sources are generators, portable space heaters, defective exhaust systems and other boats.
