Marine Technologies Inc (MTI) - Notifies Users of MTI Carbon Monoxide (CO) Alarms That May Fail to Alarm at Low-Concentrations of Carbon Monoxide

(Volo, IL – May 1, 2007) MTI Industries, maker of the Safe-T-Alert™ brand of Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarms is notifying users that a small percent of their model 60 series CO alarms manufactured between March 2006 and November 2006 may not respond to low-level concentrations of CO. The UL Standard for CO Alarms, UL2034, requires performance testing of CO Alarms at three concentrations; 70, 150 & 400 parts per million (ppm) of CO. The alarms affected by this notice may not respond at 70ppm, but DO respond accurately at the 150 & 400 ppm test concentrations.
It is important to note that CO alarms will not “nuisance alarm”. If these units go into alarm, they have detected rising CO levels and appropriate action should be taken to secure the safety of all affected. The alarm should never be disconnected.
The vast majority of the affected CO Alarms were supplied as original equipment on Recreational Vehicles and boats. However, a smaller percentage of units may have been purchased for other use, such as residential.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO:
Check your MTI CO alarm’s date code that is located on the back of the unit. If it has been manufactured between March 2006 and November 2006, call MTI customer service at (800) 383-0269 for a free exchange. If it was manufactured prior to July 2002 it is time for the alarm to be replaced. At the request of the Consumer Products Safety Commission and others UL is changing the current standard to include a replacement or end of life date. MTI recommends changing out any if its Safe-T-Alert brand units if they are over 5 years old.
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a silent killer that can be present in residences, when we travel, camp, vacation in RVs or go boating. No matter where you encounter CO, within minutes, high concentrations of this odorless, colorless and invisible gas can become lethal. Having a CO alarm that is Listed for its’ appropriate use (including Recreational vehicles and boats) and is in good working order is an essential part of safety.
